RHS Announces 2020 Homecoming Activities & Spirit Days

The Russell High School Student Council has announced the activity schedule and spirit days for next week’s revamped Homecoming Week festivities.

The week will open on Monday, Sept. 28 when students, faculty and staff will be encouraged to dress according to the “Monochrome Monday” spirit day theme. Each class will be assigned a color based on the Uno card deck (Seniors=Blue, Juniors=Red, Sophomores=Green, Freshmen=Yellow, Staff=Orange), and encouraged to incorporate that color into their clothing choices as much as possible on that day. The day will conclude with the annual Powder Puff girls’ football game at 8:00 p.m., or 30 minutes following the conclusion of the C-Team volleyball triangular with Hays and TMP-Marian. The volleyball triangular is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. inside Amos Morris Gymnasium.

Tuesday’s spirit day theme is “Trash Bag Tuesday.” Students and staff are free to get creative, and use trash bags and duct tape as their clothing attire that day. From trash bag tuxedos to duct tape wallets, and anything in between. It’s all in play. We want to see what our kids can come up with using trash bags and duct tape. The annual Iron Man boys’ volleyball game will also take place Tuesday evening at 8 p.m. inside Amos Morris Gymnasium.

The temperature is forecasted to drop on Wednesday, so it’s only appropriate that Wednesday’s spirit theme will be “Winter Wednesday.” Students and staff are encouraged to dust off their winter wardrobes, dig out the ugly sweaters, mix up some hot cocoa, and dream about winter for the day.  A new Homecoming event will also take place on Wednesday, with a school-wide dodgeball tournament scheduled to take place during an extended lunch period outside at Schaffer Field. The event will bring together both the AM and PM students in an environment conducive to social distancing.

“Teacher Thursday” is Thursday’s spirit day theme. Students can come to school dressed as their favorite teacher or staff member for the day. The annual bonfire will make its return Thursday evening at approximately 9:00 p.m., or 30 minutes following the conclusion of the varsity volleyball triangular with St. John and Ellsworth. The volleyball event is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. inside Amos Morris Gymnasium. Masks will be required to be worn by all in attendance at the bonfire since it is traditionally a large gathering of people.

Friday’s spirit day will be the traditional “Blue & Red Day.” Students and staff are encouraged to wear Russell High School’s school colors, Blue & Red, as the Broncos prepare for that night’s varsity football game at 7 p.m. against the Scott City Beavers. The traditional crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen will take place at 6:30 p.m. Following the game, the annual Homecoming Dance will take place in the “Rock Garden” commons area, adjacent to the RHS cafeteria.

“We are excited for this new and improved Homecoming Week opportunity,” Shawn Henderson, RHS Principal, said. “Our students and administrators worked well with each other to come up with a game plan that everybody can get on board with and get excited about. We are eager to watch it all come together, and watch our kids make some special memories over the next week.”
