KSHSAA Winter Sports Post-Season Information

The 2021 winter sports post-season has arrived for Russell High School. Bronco wrestling has navigated through a three-step state qualifying process, a modification made due to Covid considerations, while Bronco basketball will compete in a sub-state process that will feel much closer to normal.

Wrestling

Junior Jacob Windholz is the only member of the Bronco wrestling team still standing. He will compete in the KSHSAA 3-2-1A State Wrestling tournament Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays. Windholz owns a 26-6 record on the season, and will face Silver Lake’s Kai Allen in Bout 26 on Saturday. Wrestling will begin at 12:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Due to Covid considerations, seating capacity inside Gross Memorial Coliseum will be limited to 800 spectators. All spectators must have a KSHSAA-issued ticket voucher to purchase a ticket at the FHSU Box Office.

Basketball

Brackets for the 3A Sub-State basketball tournament have been released. Both the Broncos and Lady Broncos have drawn the No. 7 seed in the eight-team, single elimination tournament. The event begins on Monday, March 1, when the Russell girls make the short trip to Hays to face the TMP-Marian Monarchs. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside historic Al Billinger Fieldhouse. The winner will advance to Thursday’s semifinal contest to face the winner of the quarterfinal game between Minneapolis and Goodland. The semifinal contest will take place in Norton.

The Bronco boys take the spotlight on Tuesday, traveling east to renew a North Central Activities Association rivalry with the Minneapolis Lions. Tuesday’s semifinal game will begin at 7 p.m., with the winner advancing to Norton on Friday to meet the winner of the quarterfinal game between Norton and Colby.
