At the June 29, 1992 meeting, the Kansas Committee on School District Finance and Quality Performance discussed the importance of making the most effective use possible of the school site councils mandated by the new school finance law. The Committee believes these councils offer enormous potential for contributing to the success of school restructuring activities, which are underway virtually everywhere throughout the state.
The statute required that on or before January 1, 1993, school site councils must be established for each school. These councils must be composed of the principal and representatives of teachers and other school personnel, parents of pupils attending the school, the business community and other community groups.
Children who will be six years old on or before August 31, 2001 may be admitted to first grade. All those entering first grade, who have not attended USD #407 schools previously, must present a birth certificate. Enrollment is not complete until this is done. A transfer student who does not meet the age requirement is allowed to enroll if the child, while a resident of another state, completed an accredited kindergarten course or entered a state accredited first grade.
Bicycle riding as a means of transportation is permitted. All bicycles should be parked in the racks provided. Only bike riders should be in the bike parking area.
A child riding a bicycle should know the Bicycle Safety Rules. Riders must observe the following rules:
1. Children are to walk their bicycles on the school grounds
and at all
intersections and crossing lanes adjoining the school grounds.
2. One person to a bike unless the bike is specifically made for
more than one.
3. The bicycle will be in good working condition.
4. Bicycle riders will use hand signals.
5. Bicycle riders will observe all traffic rules.
6. Bicycle riders will ride single file.
It is very important for children riding bicycles to wear safety helmets!
Children who fail to comply with theses rules may be denied
permission to ride to school on their bicycles.
Simpson Elementary School operates a library equipped with twelve on-line computer stations for student use. Both direct instruction and vicarious computer programs are utilized to stimulate interest and confidence in young students. Classroom teachers have time available to take their students to the Media Center in order to do both independent and class projects.
With regard to library books and checkout procedures: Library books are the responsibility of those persons checking them out. If a book is lost, badly damaged, or destroyed, it is to be paid for by the borrower. Library books are checked out on a weekly basis. If a book is not returned promptly, the student will not be allowed to check out another book until the overdue book is returned.
In order for your school to fulfill its purpose in affording each of you with the opportunity to develop to the best of your potential, it is essential that we maintain an atmosphere that is conducive to learning. Many factors contribute in varying degrees to this learning environment. One such factor is the attitude with which the student approaches his grooming and personal appearance.
Students will be expected to keep themselves well groomed and neatly dressed at all times. Any form of dress or hair style which is considered contrary to good hygiene or which is distractive or disruptive in appearance and detrimental to the purpose or conduct of the school will not be permitted. "Muscle" shirts are not appropriate for classroom attire. Clothing which promotes alcoholic beverages, tobacco etc., are not permitted. Shirts imprinted with scatological references or double-entendre are not permitted. Hats will not be permitted to be worn in the school building. The important determination is if the attire distracts from the learning environment.
Specific Guidelines:
A. Halter tops, muscle shirts or see-through shirts are
not permitted. The
student's shirt/top must extend from his/her neck to his/her shoulder.
All
shirts must cover the student's stomach. Consequences for inappropriate
tops/shirts not covering the stomach will be: (1st time) Student
will change
his/her top. (2nd time) The student will change and parents will
be
contacted. (3rd time and thereafter) The student will be placed
on in-school
suspension.
B. Dresses, skirts and shorts must extend below the student's fingertips while the student is standing straight up. Shorts worn by students must be of appropriate length and cut-offs will not be allowed. Consequences for inappropriate dresses, skirts and shorts will be: (1st time) Student will change clothes. (2nd time) The students will change and parents will be contacted. (3rd time and thereafter) The student will be placed on in-school suspension.
C. Clothing with obscene, suggestive or sexual double meanings imprinted or pictured will not be permitted. Clothing alluding to or portraying alcoholic beverages, drugs or smoking materials is considered unacceptable.
The principal will make the final determination in questions
regarding appropriate attire and grooming.
