11,12 ACT test –Test date June 12; Register by May 7. Register online at www.act.org
12 NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse – If you want to be eligible to play at the NCAA Division I or II level you should begin the process now. All info is online at: www.ncaaclearinghouse.net
12 College Visits – Visits must be arranged by the counselor and approved by a parent/guardian. April 30th is the visit deadline.
12 Selective Service – All young men are to register one month before or after their 18th birthday. You can register on-line (www.sss.gov) or you can register at the Post Office. It’s fast. It’s easy. It’s the law.
10-12 American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Training- Must be 16 years of age. June 1-12 from 6-10pm at the BartonCCC pool. Friday and Saturday will be from 8:30-11:30am at the Great Bend Rec Center or City Pool. Fee: $150. Enroll by Friday, May 28. Call 620-793-3755 for more info.
9-11 Barton County Community College- Breaking Traditions- Career Exploration Opportunities June 8-10. This program is for 2010-11, 9th, 10th & 11th graders. Participants attend a camp to experience non-traditional fields of work such as Early childhood education and Medical Lab Technology for guys and Agriculture, Automotive, Computer networking Graphic Design, EMT & energy industry technician for girls. 11 Dane Hansen Scholarships – Beginning in the Fall of 2010 applicants must have taken the ACT test and have a composite score of 21 or higher to be eligible.
12 Job Corps – A career and education program for students ages 16-24 who meet income requirements at no cost to the eligible students. Job corps offers hands on training and career transition services.
9-12 Military Exploring Encampment 2010-Open to anyone ages 14-20 interested in the military. Friday September 10 – Sunday September 12. $25 fee per person. Register by September 1. Make checks payable to: United State Army
11 Sunflower Bank Community Ambassadors – Juniors: if you would like to learn more about Russell and have a chance to win $1,750 in local scholarship money, pick up your application to be a Community Ambassador. Nine students must apply for scholarships to be offered. Due May 31

9-12 National Peace Essay Contest 2010-11- Topic: For those who hope to prevent violent conflict, how can their efforts to reduce, if not eliminate, corruption best contribute to building sustainable peace. 1,500 word maximum. Essays due by February 1, 2011. Three national winners and 53 state level winners ($1,000).
9-12 Voice of Democracy Scholarship -3-5 min. audio essay on the theme “Does My Generation Have A Role in America’s Future?”. Deadline: Nov. 1. Local winner- $600 savings bond. Top National Award: $30,000 scholarship. See Mr. Zachman for helpful tips, hints and more information.
11-12 Wendy’s High School Heisman – Seniors may apply for Russell High School’s male or female nomination if they have a “B” average GPA and participate in at least one sport by going to www.wendysheisman.com. Apply before October 3.
12 Young Arts Program- Benefits include $500,000 in scholarships, all- expense paid trip to Miami for YoungArts Week National finalists, All expense paid trip to New York City for Gold and Silver award winners for In the Studio- a unique interdisciplinary experience dedicated to furthering the Young Arts experience, classes with world-renowned artists.
