  1. Are you applying for Federal Student Aid?   Apply for your PIN early! A PIN is an electronic access code number that serves as an identifier.  A PIN lets you access your personal federal student aid information online in various U.S. Department of Education systems. It works much like the personal identification number you get from your bank. Whether you complete a paper FAFSA or file an application using FAFSA on the Web you can get a PIN.  Your application for Federal Student Aid will move more quickly if you and one parent have a PIN before you complete the FAFSA.  Get your PIN at:  www.pin.ed.gov

9-12        FAFSA4caster at http://www.fafsa4caster.ed.gov- New online opportunity that allows students to get an estimate of their financial aid opportunities.  If you are an underclassman and you want to know what you might receive for financial aid, this will help!
12           Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) – This is the one application required to receive most federal grants and loans.  You may not begin the application until January 1.  Preferred deadline:  March 1.  Go to:  www.fafsa.ed.gov
11,12      ACT test –Test date April 10, Register by March  5.  Test date June 12;  Register by May 7.  Register online at www.act.org    
12           NCAA  Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse – If you want to be eligible to play at the NCAA Division I or II level you should begin the process now.  All info is online at:  www.ncaaclearinghouse.net
12           College Visits – Visits must be arranged by the counselor and approved by a parent/guardian.
12           Selective Service – All young men are to register one month before or after their 18th birthday.  You can register on-line(www.sss.gov) or you can register at the Post Office.   It’s fast.  It’s easy.  It’s the law.

9- 12       Pharmacy Technician program – PT’s help pharmacists prepare prescription medications, provide customer service and administrative duties.  Barton County Community College has a new program!

OPPORTUNITIES

9-12        Lifeguard class – March  14-20 at Barton CCC.  $90 fee, must be 16; Lifeguard Recertification:  $45
CPR Class – Saturday, March 13.  8:30-4:00 pm.   $10 fee.  Call  620-793-3755 for more info.   Enroll by March 11th.
10-12     Leadership Institute 2010 -  Dodge City Community College- Earn college credit, take part in team building and leadership activities and learn about your future career path.  Six areas to choose from:  Business, Fire/Rescue, Future Teachers, Future Nurses, Law Enforcement, Music and Performing Arts and Write to Win.  June 5-12.  $150 fee.  Apply by May 1.  Download applications at:  www.dc3.edu/li
10- 12    Kansas Summer Academy for Future Teachers – June 13-18 at Emporia State University and at Dodge City Community College June 6-12.    Recommended for any 10th or 11th grader interested in teaching with a 2.75 GPA and a recommendation.  Seniors DCCC date only.  Apply by March 19th.   Download applications at:  www.emporia.edu/jones/kfta/application.pdf

9- 12       Kansas State University – Women’s rowing team is actively recruiting female athletes.  If you are 5’ 9” or taller and interested in participating in a Division I sport see Mr. Zachman for details.
                Loren Mall Leadership Scholarships (2-$500) – from Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity.  Applications will be judged on grades, ACT scores, school /community activities and leadership.  Recipents are not obligated to join the fraternity.  Apply at:   www.deltasigonline.com
12           K- State @ SalinaEngineering Technology ELITE Scholarship for new freshmen, current K-State students and transfer students.  Programs included are:  Construction Engineering Technology, Web Development, Digital Media Technology; Computer systems Technology, Electronic & Computer Engineering Technology; and Mechanical Engineering Technology.  Deadline for application:  March 5

9- 12       University of KansasSWE Weekend of Engineering- March 6&7. Cost-$95.  This is a camp for high school girls that blends fun educational activities and a glimpse of the KU college experience.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND CONTESTS

12           American Petroleum Institute – Requirements:  Upper 50% of class; Parent or guardian must be employed in some phase of the oil industry.  Applications due March 31.  Four renewable $1000 scholarships

12           Clara Barton Hospital and Foundation Scholarship – Nursing and health career scholarships for students in the Clara Barton Hospital service area (Clara Barton Clinic- Russell).Applications due April 1

12           Steve Harper Scholarship -  A $1,000 award for a high school senior who will attend a Kansas college and major in either natural resources or photography. Criteria:  Academic performance and financial need. Due April 15.

12           Kansas Board of Regents Scholarships-   $10.00 processing fee.  Most require a FAFSA and ACT by December.  Applications may be completed on-line at:  www.kansasregents.org
Kansas Comprehensive Grant – Due April 1; for students attending a private college in Kansas.  Does not require the State Application, but you need to list your colleges of choice on your FAFSA
Kansas State Scholarship- Must take the ACT by December and complete the Regents Recommended Curriculum.  If you qualify you will be notified by March.
Ethnic Minority Scholarship- Due May 1;  Must complete the Regents Recommended Curriculum and have a minimum ACT of 21.
Teacher Scholarship- Due May 1; Must complete the Regents Recommended Curriculum & want to teach in the following areas:   Special Education, Foreign language or Vocational /Practical Arts
Nursing Scholarship- Due May 1;  Applicant must locate a licensed sponsor to provide partial scholarship funding and employment upon licensure

12           Kansas Society of Certified Public Accountants-$500-$1,300 Scholarships for students who rank high in the ACT, Demonstrate leadership, plan to major in accounting and will attend a Kansas University or college.  ACT scores due March 9.  Applications due April 20.

12           Russell County Area Community Foundation Scholarship  - Applications are now available.  Scholarships include:  Boehler, Dole, Joshua, Murphy, Ochs, and Pohlman Scholarship.  Applications available at:  www.rcacf.net        Apply by March 31

12           Vietnam Veterans of American Scholarship – Two $500 awards- Application and recommendations required.  Relationship to a Vietnam Veteran is not required. Applications dues April 15
