by the LLES coaching staff
November was a busy month for the LLES boys basketball team. Unfortunately, the preseason tournament at Agra was cancelled but thanks to the diligence of Principal Geist we were able to schedule some games in place of the tournament games.
On November 7th we traveled to Burr Oak to play Rock Hills Jr. High in the legendary "Forum". I say legendary because Burr Oak was the first teaching and coaching position of legendary Kentucky University coach Adolph Rupp. The "C" team game was a hard fought game with the final score being Rock Hills 13-LLES 8. Brogan Naylor led the way with 6 points and Dylan Herold added 2. In the "B" game, LLES played hard defensively coming up numerous steals but had a hard time putting the ball in the hole. Final score Rock Hills 28-LLES 15. John Gridley and Kit Harp led the way with 4 points each, Garrett Keith added 3 points, and Troy Bland and Phillip Heinrich both had two. In the boys "A" game, Rock Hills' height advantage was too much to handle for the Cougars as Rock Hills went on to win 46-23. Tyler Dougherty led the way with 9 points, Sean Ward had 6, Nick Syx had 4, and Braden Schultz and Joe Merchant added 2 apiece.
On November 9th, Paradise came to town and the LLES Cougars used a raucous home crowd to their advantage and came away with two wins. The "B" team defeated Paradise 26-6. Troy Bland benefitted from numerous assists from his teammates scoring 14 points from his high post position, Kerrick Kuder added 6 points while Garrett Bland, Kevin Cain, and Kit Harp had 2 points apiece. In the "A" game, the Cougars had a little trouble turning the ball over but made up for it by rebounding well and playing tough defense. The Cougars scored many points off of Paradise turnovers and won the game 40-29. Sean Ward led the way with 14 points, Tyler Dougherty had 9 pts, Austin Beatty 8 pts., Brandon Pool 6 pts., Joe Merchant 2pts. and Nick Syx added a free throw.
On November 16th, the Cougars lost a heartbreaker to St. Marys from Great Bend. The Knights overcame an 8 point deficit to come back and win the game 32 -30. Brandon Pool led the Cougars with 11 points, Sean Ward had 7, Tyler Dougherty and Joe Merchant had 4 points each, while Austin Beatty and Nick Syx added 2 points each. No "B" game was played.
On November 20, the Cougars hosted the Damar Jr. High Antelopes and came away with two wins. The "B" team used tough defense and good rebounding to put away the Antelopes 24-13. Troy Bland led the Cougars with 10
points, Garrett Bland and Braden Sschultz scored 4 point apiece, while Brogan Naylor, Jack Long, and Kerrick Kuder each added 2 points. In the "A" game, the Cougars rallied from being 8 points down in the first half to come back and win the game 33-29. Joe Merchant led the way with 17 points, Sean Ward put in 7 points, Austin Beatty had 6 points, Tyler Dougherty had 2, Quintin Zamecnik added a free throw.
On November 30th, the Cougars hosted the Lincoln Leopards. Again, using the energy from a spirited home crowd the Cougars tallied up two more wins. The "B" team rallied using tough defense, and good shooting to pull out a win after trailing 14-6 at halftime. Final score, LLES 21-Lincoln 20. Tyler Dougherty was quoted as saying, "That was the most exciting "B" team game I've ever seen." Kerrick Kuder led the Cougars with 7 points, Garrett Keith and Troy Bland scored 4 apiece, Garrett Bland added 3, Brogan Naylor 2, and Kevin Cain added a free throw. In the "A" game, the Cougars used great rebounding and shooting to cruise to a 46-27 victory. Eight different players scored with Tyler Dougherty leading the way with 19 points, Joe Merchant scored 12, Sean Ward 4, Kit Harp hit a 3 pointer, and Brandon Pool, Quintin Zamecnik, Troy Bland, and Nick Syx each added 2 points.
