BES 5th Grade Science Classes
Our 5th graders began the year with a chemistry activity involving a “Zip Lock” Bag Reaction. Students used their observation skills to see, smell, hear, feel, but no need to taste! I put 2 tablespoons of baking soda into a quart-size plastic zipper storage bag. Students then added 10-mL indicator solution (bromthymol blue or phenol red) to wet the baking soda. They then added 2 tablespoons of calcium chloride (sidewalk de-icer). The color indicates a change to basic as CO2 fills the bag.
